On the vertical distribution of backscatter from a forest canopy for improving polinsar retrievals

چکیده
In a previous paper this author demonstrated how a macroecological plant model could be used to parameterize a backscatter model with the aim of predicting trends in backscatter and height as a function of vegetation biomass. The macroecological model used is of interest because it gives a simple description of the plant structure but remains within realistic biophysical limits. The aim of this paper is to elaborate on that approach by considering how the model characterizes the vertical profile of the backscatter response. The vertical profile is important in determining the relationship between scattering phase centre and height of a forest for interferometric studies, in the modeling of polarimetric interferometry, and in full radar tomography.

Forest Vertical Parameter Estimation Using PolInSAR Imagery Based on Radiometric Correction
This work introduces an innovative radiometric terrain correction algorithm using PolInSAR imagery for improving forest vertical structure parameter estimation. The variance of radar backscattering caused by terrain undulation has been considered in this research by exploiting an iteration optimization procedure to improve the backscattering estimation for a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image...
متن کامل3D modelling of forest canopy structure for remote sensing simulations in the optical and microwave domains
A detailed 3D structural model of a conifer forest canopy was developed in order to simulate the reflectance (optical) and backscatter (microwave) signals measured remotely. We show it is feasible to model forest canopy scattering using detailed 3D models of tree structure including the location and orientation of individual needles. An existing structural growth model of Scots pine (Pinus sylv...
متن کاملAn Analysis of Ku-Band Profiling Radar Observations of Boreal Forest
Radar sensors have the potential to retrieve vertical forest structure measurements thanks to their capability to penetrate into the foliage. However, studies are needed in order to understand better the interaction of radar beams with the canopy. The most commonly used radar technique for estimating forest parameters operates from spacecraft at different wavelength (X-, C-, and L-band). In ord...

This paper addresses an algorithm for forest height estimation using single frequency single baseline dual polarization radar interferometry data. The proposed method is based on a physical two layer volume over ground model and is represented using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) technique. The presented algorithm provides the opportunity to take advantages of t...
متن کاملThe Corsar Project: Can Polarimateric Sar Interferometry Improve Forest Biomass Estimation?
RESUME The main limitation in the application of spaceborne SAR to large-scale forest biomass mapping is the variability in canopy structure and vegetation density. It causes signal saturation and a large residual error in the parameter estimates. A problem in defining retrieval algorithms for forest biomass is that microwaves respond to the shapes, sizes, orientations and dielectric properties...
